Unveiling AI's tomorrow: A conversation with Diederik Veelo and Paul Sluimers

In preparation for the World Summit AI 2023, we asked our founder Diederik Veelo and Paul Sluimers about the current state and future prospects of artificial intelligence and its global impacts.

How has AI impacted your specific field of expertise, and what transformative changes do you foresee in the near future?

AI is transforming content creation and distribution in our industry. It enhances efficiency and creativity by automating parts of the process and enabling entirely new content possibilities. Although high-quality AI content is currently challenging to achieve, the future holds the promise of easier access, reshaping our industry and expanding storytelling possibilities.

How do you envision AI shaping various industries, and what advice would you give to businesses seeking to integrate AI into their operations?

AI's potential to reshape industries is immense. Any sector can benefit from AI, but businesses must approach it ethically and with a deep understanding of its processes. It's crucial to stay informed about what's currently possible with AI, as the field evolves rapidly. The key is to start small, experimenting with tools like data analysis or data aggregation to gain familiarity.

Moreover, businesses have a significant responsibility when integrating AI. They should actively engage in discussions about AI's societal impact, both positive and negative. This involves not only considering how AI benefits business operations but also addressing concerns about ethics, legality, and social consequences. Being at the forefront of AI adoption comes with a responsibility to shape its future use in a way that adds value to industries while safeguarding against harm.

In your opinion, what opportunities and challenges does AI present for job markets and workforce development worldwide?

AI has a significant impact on job markets and workforce development worldwide. Historically, technical innovations have led to the creation of new job roles and industries. For example, the advent of automation and robotics was once thought to reduce the need for human labor in manufacturing. However, it actually led to the growth of jobs in designing, building, and maintaining these automated systems.

Similarly, AI is positioned to change the job landscape. While some roles may evolve or be replaced, new positions will emerge, requiring different skill sets. Workforces will need to adapt, potentially requiring reskilling and upskilling efforts. In essence, AI doesn't necessarily eliminate jobs but transforms them, making it essential for individuals and industries to prepare for these shifts.

Can you share an example of an AI application or project that has personally impressed you, and explain why it stands out?

In the medical field, AI's application in melanoma detection stands out due to its remarkable speed and effectiveness, potentially saving lives. It's a clear example of AI's immediate positive impact. However, AI's transformative potential extends beyond healthcare. I believe we stand on the precipice of a major shift in how AI assists us in our daily lives. We're already witnessing this with tools like ChatGPT, which can engage in natural language conversations, and advancements in voice technology that enable voice-activated AI assistants to access real-time information from the internet. This rapid technological advancement, though a longer-term process, extends AI's reach across numerous domains. From organic learning in voice models to its application in diverse problem-solving scenarios, AI's potential knows no bounds. It's not a question of if, but when, AI will revolutionize industries, from self-driving cars to healthcare, law, and psychology, reshaping our world in the process.

What measures do you believe should be taken to bridge the AI research gap between developed and developing nations to ensure equitable technological progress?

Ensuring equitable technological progress in AI research between developed and developing nations requires a fundamental commitment to open-source development. Subscription-based AI models, such as ChatGPT, may be affordable in the Western world but can pose a significant financial burden for lower-income countries. By fostering open-source AI projects and community development, we can prevent AI from becoming an exclusive domain for the elite. Additionally, initiatives like Neuralink, which explore brain interfaces with computing devices, highlight the potential divide between those who can afford such technology and those who cannot. To bridge this gap, it's essential to prioritize accessibility to advanced AI interfaces, leveling the playing field for all nations.

What 2 people do you admire most in the world of AI in terms of their work?

Paul: When it comes to the world of AI, it's challenging to pick just two people. However, NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, stands out for his remarkable work. NVIDIA, originally in the hardware business, has shifted its focus towards AI, and the company's ethical and sensible approach to AI development is commendable. They actively support startups and provide them with valuable AI tools, so I admire his contributions to the AI field from a business perspective.

Diederik: One person in the AI world whom I admire is Andrej Karpathy. His dedication to education and his ability to simplify complex AI concepts make him a remarkable figure in the field. Andrew's extensive teaching materials, including detailed lectures and explanatory videos, have played a crucial role in helping individuals understand the fundamental principles of AI.

If you could solve any global problem in the world with AI, what would it be and why?

It would probably be climate change. This pervasive challenge poses one of the most significant threats to humanity, and leveraging AI's capabilities could be instrumental in finding innovative solutions.
